New 2016 Hyundai Elantra

2016 Hyundai Elantra Overview

  • New Value Edition trim level
  • Estimated 38 mpg on the highway
  • Two four-cylinder engine options
The 2016 Hyundai Elantra returns for the new model year with a new trim level in tow called the Value Edition which crams even more features into the compact sedan without adding much cost.

The Value Edition slots in above the base SE trim and the Sport, with the Limited trim still topping off the range. Opting for the Value Edition adds 16-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, leather steering wheel, push button start, heated front seats, and side mirror mounted turn signals.

Styling is unchanged for 2016, the Elantra still wears Hyundai’s “fluidic sculpture” design concept found up and down the lineup on vehicles like the Tucson and Accent. The Elantra is offered as a sedan or a hatchback (sold separately as the Elantra GT) and its sleek design isn’t just aesthetic, it’s very aerodynamic which helps with fuel economy. Sport models get added exterior features, including 17-inch alloy wheels, a black mesh chrome grille, and project headlights with LED accents.

Under the hood, the Elantra offers a pair of four-cylinder engine options. The Elantra’s base engine is a 145-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder that makes 130 pounds-feet of torque and is found in SE, Value Edition, and Limited trims of the sedan. Sport models get a more powerful 173-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 154 pounds-feet of torque. Transmission options include a six-speed manual or automatic and all Elantras feature front-wheel drive. Sport models also get a few suspension upgrades for a more engaging driving experience, including thicker front stabilizer bars and stiffer shocks. Fuel economy tops out at 28/38 mpg city/highway in SE/Value Edition models with the automatic transmission.

Inside, there is a surprising amount of interior space for passengers, so much in fact that the EPA actually considers the Elantra to technically be a midsize car. The Elantra continues to offer great value as well. SE models come with standard features including air conditioning, cruise control, power windows and locks, satellite radio, iPod/USB connectivity, and 60/40 split folding rear seats. We discussed the Value Edition above, and the Sport adds a power driver’s seat and aluminum pedals. The line topping Limited adds leather upholstery, heated rear seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

The 2016 Elantra impressed in crash testing, earning a full five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. Standard safety features include a six airbags, all-disc antilock brakes, electronic stability system with traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
